Yes I put it on top of the 2X-- top of the bench. then hold it down with just a few screws around the outside edge. this way you can slide anything you have on the bench. Very easy to drive your fist through it. Would not take hammer blows, pounding, etc. I did purchase two hollow-core doors to lay on portable saw horses. Definitely add a couple of coats of poly to it, and it will last for years. Wouldn't hurt to put a 3/4" hard maple edge on it to conceal & protect the raw edge of the top. Looks nice too.

WebMasonite is not really strong by itself. Placed on top of a frame such as the demonstrated workbench with backing plywood and OSB it will take a lot of abuse. On its own the masonite will be destroyed.
