The timing covers interchange between 289/302/5.0/351W engines other than fuel pump, water pump, and some other differences that vary by the year model rather than which engine it is. People put vintage 289 covers on 1990's 5.0's and 5.8's all the time. WebFeb 16, 2011 · The cracks and deterioration in the cover caused the bolt to rust and seize as rex1965 has pointed out. The problem was clearly the cover and not the block. I would try the method of soaking the bolt for several days and then use the easy out. If that doesn't work, you may have to bite the bullet and destroy the timing chain cover.

Unless you have definite evidence of pinging under a load, I would not be retarding the timing any at all.
